And Micah ordained the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah. Then Micah said, Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, because I have a Levite as priest. -Judges 17:12-13
Micah of Ephraim was an idolater. He had a house full of idols. Doing what was right in his own eyes, he ordained his own son a priest (whereas today this place will do it for you). Then along comes a Levite and Micah says, “Move over Richard Gere, the Dalai Lama has arrived.” And for his part, the wandering Levite is “content” (17:11) to serve in the idolater’s house.
This is roll-your-own religion. Micah blatantly disregarded (or perhaps had little idea of) the countless warnings given by God against idolatry and false worship. It all seemed good enough to him, and that was that. Then an army showed up at his door.
Ask questions and you are likely to find roll-your-own religion the predominant faith of Americans. The forms of Christianity are mere coating for confused paganism. Because our hearts are sinful and deceptive, it is better to “not to go beyond what is written” (1 Cor 4:6)… Which is why it’s important to know what is written.
